Cutting with a laser can produce toxic fumes that necessitate ventilation or filtration. Fumes are produced by many synthetics such as plastics and resins. Both toxic and nontoxic materials can also produce excessive smoke when cut. This smoke can cause refraction of the laser, leading to reduced accuracy, and damage to the tool’s components. Air assist systems are typically provided to move the smoke away from the laser’s path.

By virtue of its industrial and manufacturing history, the laser has developed to the scale of full-scale architecture (figure 2.11, 2.12). However, as the tool increases in size, the cost of commercially made tools increases substantially.
